Manchester United sink to new lows: The numbers behind historically bad Premier League form – Sporting News

The 2022-23 season is off to the worst possible start for Manchester United.

Despite the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils have failed to show any signs of improvement after a disappointing 2021-22 campaign

Man United have opened their season with consecutive losses against Brighton and Brentford – the first time they’ve been defeated in their opening league matches since 1992.

The Red Devils have conceded six goals in those two games with their only strike coming via an own goal.

Saturday’s 4-0 loss to Brentford marked a new low for the side and the numbers highlight just how far they’ve sunk.

Manchester United bottom of the Premier League

For the first time since August 21, 1992, Manchester United finished August 13, 2022 as the last-placed side in the Premier League.

Despite playing one more game than a number of clubs, the Red Devils’ goal-difference of minus-five saw them sink to the bottom of the table.

For the club with the most Premier League titles in history, last is not a place the club will want to stay for long.

Ten Hag will be hoping Liverpool can beat Crystal Palace by at least four goals on Monday to ensure Man United don’t stay bottom until at least matchday three.

Manchester United’s away woes continue

Brentford handed Manchester United their seventh straight away league defeat – the first time they’ve lost so many consecutively since 1936.

This latest run has seen them lose to Manchester City, Everton, Liverpool, Arsenal, Brighton, Crystal Palace and the Bees.

The Red Devils’ last away win in the Premier League now dates back to February 2022 when they beat Leeds 4-2.

United’s next away game will be played on August 27 against Southampton with more unwanted history looming if they were to lose again.

Ten Hag makes worst start as a Man United manager in over 100 years

After achieving success with Ajax, Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford knowing he had to turn the Red Devils around.

Any reversal of form still looks a long way off based on their first two games this season with Ten Hag now the first Manchester United manager since 1921 to lose their first two matches in charge.

John Chapman was the last to start with such a run of defeats with the Red Devils subsequently relegated from the top-flight in his first season.

When was the last time Manchester United were relegated?

With United at a historic low, some may be wondering when the Red Devils were last relegated from the first-division.

The answer is 1974 when they finished the 1973-74 season in second-last with 20 league losses to their name.

Manchester United have never been relegated in the Premier League era, however, with their worst season coming in 2013-14 when they finished seventh.

Prior to that campaign, the Red Devils had never finished a Premier League season lower than third.
